This weekend’s issue of The National ran a feature on Art in Action, reporting on the visits made by Colin Smyth MSP to two organisations in Dumfries and Galloway, Cample Line (Thornhill) and MERZ (Sanquhar), as well as by Rhoda Grant MSP to Circus Artspace in Inverness.
In the article, David Rushton, director of MERZ – a SCAN member organisation – talked of how contemporary visual art can play a key role in local economies which were once fed by other industries: ‘Skills are no longer something you acquire once,’ Rushton told the newspaper. ‘Nowadays you acquire a variety of skills over a lifetime, and artists are quite crucial in helping to do that.’
Art in Action aims to get as many MSPs as possible out to visit contemporary visual art activity over the summer months.
